IDN converter
Convert text to Punycode and Punycode to text.
In short
Convert internationalized domain names between Unicode and Punycode formats.
What Is an IDN?
An Internationalized Domain Name (IDN) is a domain that contains non-ASCII characters such as accented letters, Arabic script, Chinese characters, or other Unicode characters.
Because the Domain Name System was originally designed for ASCII characters, non-ASCII domains are encoded into Punycode before they are stored and resolved.
Unicode and Punycode
The Unicode form (for example, münchen.de) is the human-readable version shown in browser address bars. The Punycode form (xn--mnchen-3ya.de) is the ASCII-compatible encoding used by DNS and email systems.
IDN Converter converts between both representations so you can check the correct form for technical use.
Best For
- Developers handling international domain names in code
- Email administrators configuring domains with non-ASCII characters
- Technical SEO checks on non-Latin domain names
- DNS administrators verifying the Punycode form of an IDN
Limitations of this tool
- Conversion accuracy depends on the Unicode standard. Some edge cases with uncommon scripts may not convert as expected.
Frequently asked questions
- What is Punycode?
- Punycode is an ASCII-compatible encoding for Unicode characters used in domain names. IDN domains are stored in DNS as Punycode and begin with the prefix "xn--".
- Why do I need the Punycode form?
- Some systems, mail servers, and code libraries require the ASCII Punycode form of a domain rather than the Unicode display form.
- Do browsers display Punycode or Unicode?
- Modern browsers display the Unicode (human-readable) form in the address bar but resolve the Punycode form via DNS.
