MD5 generator
Generate a hash value using the MD5 algorithm.
In short
Generate an MD5 hash for any text string.
What Is an MD5 Hash?
MD5 (Message-Digest Algorithm 5) is a hashing function that converts any input string into a fixed 32-character hexadecimal string. The same input always produces the same hash, and any change to the input produces a completely different hash.
When MD5 Is Used
MD5 is used for data integrity checks — verifying that a file or string has not been changed. It is also used to generate consistent short identifiers from variable-length inputs and appears in legacy authentication and cache-busting implementations.
Note: MD5 is not cryptographically secure for password storage or sensitive authentication — use bcrypt, argon2, or SHA-256 for those purposes.
Best For
- Developers generating checksums for file integrity verification
- Engineers debugging legacy systems that use MD5 hashing
- Developers generating deterministic identifiers from text
- Checking whether two strings produce the same hash
Limitations of this tool
- MD5 is not suitable for password storage, digital signatures, or any security-sensitive purpose.
- Very large inputs may be truncated before hashing.
Frequently asked questions
- Is MD5 secure?
- MD5 is not considered cryptographically secure for sensitive use cases. It is vulnerable to collision attacks and should not be used for password hashing or digital signatures. Use SHA-256 or bcrypt for security-sensitive applications.
- Can an MD5 hash be reversed?
- MD5 is a one-way function — you cannot mathematically reverse it to recover the original input. However, common inputs can be looked up in precomputed rainbow tables.
- Why does the same input always produce the same hash?
- MD5 is deterministic. Given the same input, it always produces the same 32-character output, which is what makes it useful for integrity checks.
